Abstract

This study investigates the critical transitions in editorial leadership within scholarly publishing, focusing on the roles, succession, and post-tenure trajectories of Editors-in-Chief (EiCs). The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategic roles of EiCs, explore the impact of leadership changes on journal continuity, and understand the professional pathways of EiCs after their tenure. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews with former and current EiCs, associate editors, and publisher representatives, as well as document analysis of editorial policies and publication records. The findings reveal the multifaceted strategic roles of EiCs in shaping policy direction, ensuring manuscript quality, and building journal reputation. This study examines the succession processes, challenges faced by new editors, and shifts in editorial culture. Furthermore, it explores the post-tenure professional pathways of former EiCs, including advisory roles, consulting, research, and new journal initiatives. This research highlights the significance of EiCs in scholarly publishing and the importance of succession planning.
